‘They captured my cat and released him with a hernia’: Cat lover takes in a semi-feral stray, only to uncover shocking twists in his journey to a new life

Hey there, cat lovers. Sometimes, the best feline friendships come when we least expect them. We may not go looking for a cat, but somehow, they find their way to us—whether we're ready or not. And let's be honest, when a cat chooses you, there's really no saying no.

That's exactly what happened to today's featured cat person, who wasn't planning on adopting a new feline friend. But when a persistent, talkative, and unexpectedly affectionate cat showed up in October, they couldn't help but take notice. They weren't looking for another cat, and they certainly weren't a fan of letting cats roam outside. But despite their initial hesitations, they offered food and water—both of which were inhaled with a desperation that made it clear this cat wasn't just passing through.

For about a month, this little guy had to stay outside until he could get a clean bill of health from the vet—after all, there were two dogs and two other cats inside who needed to be protected. Once he was checked out, though, he fit right in like he'd always been part of the family. But this story takes a wild turn. One day, the cat went missing, only to reappear with a newly clipped ear—someone had scooped him up, neutered him, and released him back into the world. And if that wasn't strange enough, the vet discovered he had a golf-ball-sized hernia that needed emergency surgery.

Now microchipped and officially named Beefcake (a name he has certainly grown into), he’s living the life of luxury, bumming around with the dogs and out-lounging the other cats. No more outside adventures for this guy, though his human is planning to get him a harness to see if he’s up for some safe, supervised walks.

    This cat came to me in October. He was very talkative and affectionate, but I didn't want him to stick around. Well, he stuck around. A lot. I don't like cats outside, I wasn't necessarily looking for one either. I fed him and gave him water, anyways. He basically inhaled both. Which we all know cats don't even always drink a lot of water. I

    only call him semi-feral cause he can still get temperamental. He's very sweet though. Anyways, I had to keep him outside for about a month, before I could take him to the vet. Our house has two dogs and two other cats, so he can't have anything he'd pass on. He checked out and instantly fit in.

    The crazy things that happened though. One day he didn't come to our house. The next, he has his ear clipped. I planned on getting him fixed, anyways. That's not the only crazy thing though. When I saw him outside I could tell there was something wrong with his stomach, and he wouldn't let you touch it. When I took him to the vet, they said it was a hernia.

I got him into surgery and he's been recovered, but this is something I tell everyone cause even my vet and I were shocked... but he's microchipped to me now. His name is Beefcake.     "Not to mention how hard it can be actually to get a stray to the vet. I was not prepared for how difficult he was. Spent 30 minutes getting him into a carrier. Then, I had to make the choice to reschedule since I was going to be late anyway. After I took him to the vet, even though he hated it, he had a little spark to him. He knows I'm helping him. I can literally get him in a carrier with an UNOPENED can of cat food now too, since he couldn't eat before his surgery… he's something else."
